Dish Network Is FUCKED UP PLACE TO WORK...pass the word.
Well. THIS little bit of bullshit just hit today.

When Dish Network (Echostar) hired Brett, they were willing to accommodate his class schedule. "No Problem," they said, "no big deal." And it wasn't much of an accommodation -- he just came in two hours later on Mon / Tues.

Today, though, his supervisor pulled him aside and said, "We can't accommodate your schedule anymore. It sets a bad precedent. Either work our schedule or you're gone, effective tomorrow."

Translation: "Damn, we made a mistake hiring so many people in at that high hourly wage, we gotta do something to get them out of here!!"

What. The. FUCK.

This is the same place that decided that since there was a lot of illness going around, each day called off is a separate occurrence (most places, if the days are concurrent, it's just a single occurrence). They hate the Columbus center, because most of the employees there are call center veterans (ex-Discover and ex-Checkfree, from what Brett's said) and are not willing to be treated as 5 year olds -- the employees know enough to push back & speak up.

Their benefits suck (hell, even Checkfree's beat theirs). The corporate office evidently's never heard of "lead with the carrot, not shove with the stick". It has nothing to do with Brett's job performance -- his supe told him specifically that he was a great worker. They could easily have given him a couple weeks to try to work around the change, but no, they couldn't even do THAT. Asshats.

DISH, you SUCK.

Call the attorney general's office. There is definitely a law against that somewhere and they are charged with defending against this type of workplace abuse.

problem: Ohio is an "at will" state. "at will" translation: "employers get away with anything short of murder."

I'll put the bug in Brett's ear about the attorney general. But the way our luck's been lately with legal crap, I'm not looking for the law to be on our side, here.

At will is good to a point. Even then there has to be reasonable restrictions against this type of crap. At the very least he had a verbal contract stating that his class schedule would be accommodated. It's pure bullshit for them to pull this type of switcheroo bullshit on him.

To quote the Attorney General's office, "um...there's not much we can do about verbal contracts...sorry, we don't handle things like this...er, you might try contacting the US Dept. of Labor...well, no, Ohio doesn't really have any resources you can turn to..."

Ok. Brett said that his current class is the last one, ending in March, and then he takes his certification test. We'll just hold on until then. Luckily his school came through for us and said they'll arrange for the missing lectures to be recorded for him.

At least the class is ending :-\ Still, I can't believe that there aren't any resources available to combat this type of garbage. It's like hearing about business practices from the 18th century. He works at a frickin' call center doesn't he? All they have to do is maintain an average staffing level over the hours of operation, this isn't that complicated. It certainly doesn't require that everyone works the same 8 hour shift, just that the average levels balance out at the right amount for the high call volume times. Sheesh.

wow walfart isn't even that adbrupt, at least they'll browbeat you into changing your life to fit their needs. (I got the 'your restricted availibility' bullshit again today). Is there a way he could go to the labor board & fight this?

Welcome to the Bush Economy. Business's are favored, workers are screwed. Nope, Ohio doesn't have any such resource for non-union workers.

Yeah, we've both worked far worse jobs, and NONE of those places ever pulled something like this - they at least gave you notice of schedule changes & chances to work things out if there was a problem (even MCDONALD'S did that for me!).
